REGIONAL PARK ROCCAMONFINA

It extends for approximately 11 thousand of hectares, including the ancient volcanic massif of Roccamonfina and the estuary and banks of Garigliano. The characteristic volcanic massif is covered by chestnut trees, has thermal sources and a typical fauna of the wooded zones: foxes, piane, sparrow-hawks, hoopoe. The area of the Park has been subdivided in three zones called "A", "B" and "C". The zone "A" is to integral protection, the zone "B" is oriented to the protection, the zone "C" provide for the requalification of the city centers and their economic and social promotion .The entire area is dominated by the extinguished volcano of Roccamonfina and has the Garigliano river as geographic limit. The course of the river has dug its bed between volcanic lands of the Mount Roccamonfina and the limestone lands of the Mounts Aurunci.The Volcano of Roccamonfina is the most ancient volcanic apparatus of Campania, with the dimensions of 450 kmq, in planimetry, is the fourth volcano of Italy and the fifth for altitude (1,006 m.). Structurally it is very similar to Vesuvius, but it is superior in dimensions, having a diameter of more than 15 km, and has an external crater of approximately 6 km of diameter and inside there are the volcanic cones of the Mount Santa Croce and the Mounts Làttani, formed in following ages.

HOW TO ARRIVE

Roccamonfina, locality of Campania in province of Caserta, it is approximately 14 km far from the Motorway A2 Rome-Naples, with exit Caianello. In alternative, the center is reachable, by car, by the State road Casilina, that it is approximately 16 km far from the crossroad of Caianello. The nearer railway station is Vairano Scalo,on the Naples-Rome line (Via Cassino): there are daily connections for Caserta (15 races every day), for Naples (14 races every day) and for Rome (8 races every day in winter and in summer). Roccamonfina can be reached also by public bus on the line Roccamonfina - Sessa - Caserta/Vairano/Teano, with connections for Caserta (3 races every day), for Vairano (7 races every day) and for Sessa Aurunca (6 races every day).
