NATURAL OASIS MONTE POLVERACCHIO
The Park Mount Polveracchio belongs to the chain of the Mounts Picentini, massif that extends between the province of Salerno and that one of Avellino and includes the higher tops of the Appennino of Campania. The area includes two different oasis, the one of Polveracchio and Valle della Caccia, that correspond to two sides of the same summit. The water is abundant and slips to the valley with beautiful falls, giving life on a side to Tenza torrent and joining to Sele on the other side. The environment is Appennine: before yielding the step to the prairies of altitude, the beech tree predominates with exemplaries of remarkable dimensions, forming a forest of which mountain maple-trees, ancient hollies and yew trees make part. Interesting the presence of a zone of birch pendula, while in Valle della Caccia, characterized above all by the extraordinary spread of the black pine, there is an ilex-grove of exceptional beauty and antiquity. In wet valleys vegetation changes: we find manna-ashes , mountain maple trees and service trees. In the clearings crochi, violets, buttercups bloom. Symbol of the oasis is the wolf, present on the Mounts Picentini with one of the last southern populations. Between the other mammals that find shelter in the park, there are doormouses, dormouses, oaks, martens, badgers, wild cats , foxes, polecats. On the old trees the rare black woodpecker and the green woodpecker live , while the prairies are inhabited by the coturnice. Numerous the day and night birds of prey: the sparrow, the kestrel, the buzzard, the travelling hawk, the royal eagle, the screech owl, the owl, the barn owl. Between the amphibians there are the ululone, salamander and the newt.
